Little-Known Facts About Big Bear In California

Big Bear Mountain in Southern California is a ski area and hotspot for recreational activities like no other. From fishing and water sports to hiking and winter sports, this holiday destination offers unparalleled opportunities to unwind and have a great time.

Bear Mountain is formerly known as Goldmine Mountain, and when its neighbor bought Bear Mountain in 2002, the new entity was dubbed Big Bear Mountain Resorts. It has acquired the nickname “The Park” due to the irregular terrain that comprises it. It is made up of three main peaks, namely Bear Peak, Silver Mountain, and Goldmine Mountain, and its summit is Southern California’s highest peak served by a lift.

Big Bear is more broadly appealing to younger crowds, while its sister mountain Snow Summit offers a more family-oriented feel and overall vibe. While its main reputation lies in its snowy slopes, it’s not just for snow enthusiasts. The whole area provides an endless array of opportunities to explore the mountain resort, lake, and town, with a gorgeous pine forest surrounding the vicinity.

Big Bear is a mere two hours away from Los Angeles, putting it within easy access of LA dwellers who want some good outdoor time. The easiest way to reach the resort from LA, San Diego, and the San Fernando Valley is from Highway 330. The mountain’s altitude – a vertical drop of 1,665 ft. and elevation gain of 1,665 ft. from base camp – makes sure it’s never too hot in the area as it enjoys more than 320 days of glorious sunshine annually.

Winter boarders as well as skiers can experience 28 trails spread across almost 200 acres of terrain, connected by a network of 12 chair lifts at Bear Mountain. Big Bear is just as enthralling in the spring and summer, where visitors can hike, bike, and enjoy the lake teeming with bass as well as rainbow trout.
